MARCO FARAONE

Author Valeria Cecolin | Date 26/07/2019

Hi Marco, tell us a little about your background...

I started playing at the age of 14, when I was still at school.

My grandfather was a folk singer, and in the 80s my father was a music selector for a local radio in his town, so I grew up surrounded by music. I was lucky enough to have a large collection of records from that time, such as Jean-Michel Jarre's first LPs, up to 80s real sounds like Imagination and of course all the masterpieces of Italian music like Pino Daniele, Lucio Battisti and Mina. My musical background ranges through different sounds, including some that I later discovered, such as hip hop. In my home town in Tuscany, Lucca, there was no real electronic scene, so the only way to get close to parties was by playing other music genres, and hip hop was what I decided to ride in my first DJ sets, with artists like Run DMC, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg and many others.

My musical evolution has also gone through drum & bass, at a time when I felt like playing faster stuff. I approached house and techno sounds around 2006, while going to the first clubs in Versilia such as Kama Kama and Frau Marleen, up to the legendary Tenax in Florence, where I fell in love with electronic music and became a resident DJ in 2012. I took the first steps in this genre by listening to the house sounds of artists like Masters at Work and Danny Tenaglia up to Jeff Mills's techno.

What are your sources of inspiration?

During my artistic career I was influenced by different sounds and artists, but I want to mention those that influenced my current sound. Laurent Garnier was definitely one of the first DJs who brought me into this genre, thanks to his ability to mix different music styles during a set, always maintaining an enviable quality. Other artists that deserve to be mentioned are Jeff Mills and definitely Marco Carola, the first Italian DJ that I appreciated and followed from the very first moment.

In any case, I don't like to be categorized as a DJ belonging to a single sound, I love to range a lot during my sets and try to always create a new and different wave.

How would you describe your live sets, and what kind of preparation is behind it?

They’re very eclectic, I don't actually like preparing a set but I always try to improvise. I don't like monotonous sets that don't surprise me, I try to perceive originality combined with quality. Each club has got its own history, soul and energy, but above all a different crowd based on the different cities where they are located. Therefore, preparing a set before would be restrictive, as you never know what vibe you are going to get at a party. So I prefer to always go a little earlier to the club, to understand what kind of energy and situation I will find, and this is the time when I get an idea of my set.

Which of your productions is the one you feel most connected to and why?

My first EP on Moon Harbour, "Strange Neighbors", released in 2010 is definitely the album that started my career and the first one played by important artists, such as Ricardo Villalobos, Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Martinez Brothers and many others. It was one of the first tech house records I produced. At that time it was a fresh and innovative sound, where there was still a lot to be discovered. Today it is a bit overused, so I felt like evolving towards something different. I'd also like to mention my first EP on Drumcode, an essential piece for my performance in many international techno festivals such as Awakenings, up to my EP on Rekids, one of my favourite labels ever, and “On My Way ", my top record for the last 2 years.

Let's talk about your new productions...

A few days ago I signed a new four-track EP on Rekids that will be released towards the end of the summer, a new single on Uncage with the remixes of Mark Broom, Efdemin and Mike Huckuby, a new EP on my friend Shlomi Aber's label, with an incredible remix by Alexander Kowalski, a true legend. I was about to forget the remix for Radio Slave's great classic "Grindhouse", coming out on Rekids this winter.

Tell us about your UNCAGE record label.

Uncage comes mainly from my desire to express myself and communicate something of mine to the public.

The idea of the label has always been to create a crew of artists, focusing on new talents and supporting them with important names in the scene; indeed most of our records are played by new and almost unknown artists. For me this is undoubtedly a big bet, at a time when the record market is falling apart and sales are very difficult.

However, I am very satisfied because I have involved artists like Radio Slave, Donato Dozzy, Skudge, Eduardo de la Calle, Mike Huckaby and Aux 88, just to name a few, always trying to keep a well-defined sound line with high profile artists. We have recently changed distribution and I'm about to start a parallel project called "Uncage Swap Series", a sub-label oriented towards more house sounds, the first album will be released during the summer with a Spencer Parker remix.

Is there any particularly outstanding emerging talent that is collaborating with the label?

I always try to involve new artists, maybe even Italians, to support our scene.

I produced two EPs with a group from Florence called Hertz Collision, as I was very impressed by their techno sounds. Besides being my friends, I really like their music. Mattia Trani is another artist that I respect and who has collaborated with my label, remixed by Donato Dozzy, one of the artists I most admire. Internationally, I believe a lot in Prism, soon to be released on Uncage and Reformed Society.

How do you experience new technologies and how do you use them?

I've been playing for 17 years, so I’ve approached almost any type of technology, both in the studio and during my sets.

I think the most important thing is the final outcome and not so much how we get there. I have heard trivial and unoriginal DJ sets from artists who boasted of playing only on vinyl, so this, in my opinion, matters very little. Today the world of DJing has evolved a lot, and often playing in a certain way (such as on vinyl) has become complicated. I believe that there is nothing wrong with approaching technology, the important thing is not to abuse it, making it more important than music. As I see the market for new DJ equipment, I think we will go much further and everyone will soon be playing with digital technologies. We can count on one hand the DJs who still play on vinyl in important festivals and venues, and this inevitably influences the new generations.

Can you describe your mood during a DJ set?

I am very concentrated, often nervous before my sets. I think that my mood will not change over the years, and it’s perhaps what still makes me love my work and what I do. Emotion keeps my passion for music alive. I think the role of the DJ is a bit like that of a shaman, you have to somehow make your public live an experience, take them on a journey through music. I grew up playing in any kind of club and atmosphere, paying my dues for a long time, even suffering a lot. I think the public should always have fun and leave the club with a smile and a positive memory of it.

Relationship with Ibiza.

I am very fond of this island, I have been coming here since I was 17 and played in the first boat parties with 100 people.

I have always dreamed of performing in some important clubs, but I knew from the beginning that it wouldn't be easy and that it would take a long time to do it. Seeing myself today in many of these clubs makes me feel proud, as I know perfectly the whole path I had to go through to get there, as well as I know what I still have to do to reach new goals. The island is changing a lot and is turning into a new reality, it's very difficult to understand what will happen in the next few years, but I would like its spirit never to change and remain like the one I discovered the first day I came.

Music On is one of the best events on the island, how does it feel to be part of its line up?

I am honoured and happy to have been part of this event for some years now.

Marco Carola for me is a legend, an artist I've been following from the first day I approached this musical genre. It makes me happy that after years he was one of the first to support my music, appreciating my DJ sets and my productions. As an artist, I believe that there is nothing better than being respected, appreciated and supported by an icon like him.

In what other events can we see you this summer on the island?

After Pyramid at Amnesia, my next dates will be at Benimussa Park on July 23rd with Fritz Kalkbrenner for the Magic Garden opening, at Music On, on August 1st (Pacha), at Tenax on August 6th (Pikes Hotel), at Luciano's Vagabundos on August 30th (Amnesia) and at Amnesia closing party in October. Other dates have still to be confirmed.

ND is very sensitive to sustainability issues. What do you personally do for the environment?

I am very committed to recycling, which in my home town has been mandatory for many years.

Just think that "Capannori", part of the municipality of Lucca was the first town in Italy to apply a strict separate collection of waste.

And finally, are you Night or Day?

Absolutely Night.

My generation began to work collecting on the one hand what learnt at school, whose references were all French and depicted a very pompous cuisine, while on the other it saw the real world and discovered a kitchen in which mayonnaise and ketchup were mixed.
