JUDO SIN BARRERAS

Author Valeria Cecolin | Date 25/09/2019

Name.

Sergio Cardona.

Where are you from?

Ibiza.

What do you do?

I am a judo teacher, although I have always combined my profession with other jobs. Right now, as well as doing my judo classes, I'm also working in a school.

Please tell us when and how you started your project "Judo sin Barreras".

It's been more than 12 years since I started teaching judo, which I have been practising since I was 5 (now I am 32). Judo has brought me many things at all levels. You can say that it's partly thanks to judo that I'm the way I am. When I started teaching judo, I really realized the benefits it brings to all the people who practice it, both children and adults, on a physical, mental, emotional, and social level... In addition to all this, thanks to judo I've met great people, including Roberto Paños, a fellow judo player from our neighbouring island, Formentera. Roberto is a behavioural therapist for people with disabilities. We have always been aware of the benefits that judo brings to neurotypical people, and we wanted people with functional diversity to also take advantage of these benefits. In 2017 I founded my own judo club, Dojo Ibiza and, thanks to my club and Rober’s help, we started our adapted judo project with the name “Judo Sin Barreras (Judo Without Barriers)”. We started with 3 students and today we have about 20.

What is it and what is its purpose?

The project involves carrying out judo sessions adapted to all types of people with some kind of disability. Classes take place every Saturday morning at the Club, in Ibiza. We have two groups divided by age and, all those who want to help are invited to take part in these sessions, have a good time on a Saturday morning or just watch what we do. Everyone involved is a volunteer. We're doing "inclusion upside down". That is, sessions adapted to those attended by the students of my ordinary classes and anyone who wants to come. Usually, inclusion takes place within an ordinary group with a series of adaptations. We do it the other way around to reach more people, as sometimes, inclusion in a group isn't easy or real. Once they spend some time in the adapted classes, and when we think it is best, we move them to the ordinary classes that run from Monday to Friday.

Who are the courses aimed at?

As the name of the project says, we don't put any type of barrier. It is open to people with any type of physical or mental disability. And, as I said before, to anyone who wants to help us and share time and space with our students. We give everyone the opportunity to grow as a person, with the values that judo and this activity brings.

What are the activities carried out?

We work above all on a motor level (dislocation, joint mobility, etc.). Our students learn to stay within a group, to help each other, and then a bit of the technical side of judo is adapted to the characteristics of each one. All this, under the discipline needed to make a martial art like judo. We are lucky to do a sport that everyone can practice, each one at their level.

How is the response of those who participate? What benefits or improvements have you noticed thanks to your activities?

We develop friendship, cooperation, help with each other, respect (essential in judo)... and all this can be seen on the participants. On a behavioural level, we have noticed how the discipline and perseverance that you need to carry out this activity is extrapolated outside the tatami and, in this way, the participants improve their behaviour in their day-to-day life, in everyday life. It's a moment of leisure, a moment of the week that everyone is looking forward to.

The benefits are innumerable: they lose the fear of physical contact, they get to know better their own body, they gain self-confidence, anxiety is reduced and concentration is increased, tolerance to frustration is improved, they channel energy, they adapt to rules, their self-esteem improves, etc.

On a physical level, their coordination, flexibility, balance improve... Judo helps them to develop all muscles and, the effort involved in physical activity increases resistance.

Something we are proud of this activity, beyond the learning and the evolution of our students, is the community, the feeling of family and friendships that has been created among them and all those who collaborate in this project.

What is your best achievement so far?

On a sports, personal level, the recently gained gold medal in the Spanish Veterans Championship. The achievements and medals that some of my students have reached nationally and internationally are also very important for me as a teacher, but, without a doubt, the greatest achievement for me, beyond the sports results, is to be able to get to so many people through judo, that so many people, children and adults, enjoy the benefits brought by this martial art and put a grain of sand to help the integral development of all those who practice judo. We cannot forget that judo was born with the main purpose of forming better people for society.

What is your favourite place in Ibiza?

I keep it for myself so that it doesn't fill up with more tourists... but I am a great lover of the island, its history, its culture and its corners.

And finally, are you NIGHT or DAY?

It depends on the occasion... but if I have to choose one, DAY.

Hi Gennaro, it’s a great honour to have you in our magazine. What do you remember most about your beginnings in the culinary world? It's always necessary to contextualize the historical moment. My generation began to work collecting on the one hand what learnt at school, whose references were all French and depicted a very pompous cuisine, while on the other it saw the real world and discovered a kitchen in which mayonnaise and ketchup were mixed. In short, our cuisine had no identity: farfalle pasta with salmon, shrimp cocktail, and champagne risotto reigned supreme. In practice...
