JAMIE JONES

Author Valeria Cecolin | Date 27/07/2019

In view of the upcoming next edition of the DJ Awards 2019, we have interviewed Jamie Jones, who was nominated for the International DJ category.

What were the music influences you grew up with?

I guess my earliest memories of music are going into town with my mother on a Saturday and singing all the lyrics of Whitney Houston, like “Greatest Love Of All” or “How Will I Know”… it was around 1985 and I was 5 years old. But my biggest influence was probably Michael Jackson. I remember that when his video “Bad” came out on a TV show on Saturday morning, and I saw it for the first time, I was just so excited! I think it was from then that I started being completely obsessed with Michael Jackson, so that was my main influence.

What do you remember of your first steps into the electronic music scene?

I first had my turntables when I was 15 and I was playing for a party in my town, in North Wales. Then in 1998 I went to Ibiza on holiday for the first time, before moving to London to go to university in 1999. The following summer I went back to the island for the season and had my first job giving out flyers for Judge Jules and his party Judgment Sundays at Eden. But my first big break was when a girl called Rosanna, who was working for Space and Manumission, got hold of a soulful house mixtape that I’d made and she really liked it. So she gave me my first residency, where I got to meet Dan Ghenacia and Damian Lazarus and started working on my first releases.

And how would you describe the evolution of your career since then?

I never think about how my career has grown or developed. I really try to focus on what’s going on right now, how I feel right now, what I want to do right now, and I don’t really waste so much time thinking too far into the future or the past. Every time that I become bored of something or a sound, I try to do something about it, and that has probably affected the development of  my career. Around the late 2000s, I became bored of minimal as it was dominating Ibiza, the clubs and the market, so I decided to do something different and that’s how my first Essential Mix came out. I was a minimal tech DJ producer at that time, but that mix was literally just kind of disco electro, completely out of genre from what I was doing previously. It went down amazingly, and I got a lot of messages from much bigger DJs saying how much they loved it, and I think that helped influence the direction I took for the next several years. I started Hot Natured with Lee Foss and our parties were a huge success. Before anything else it was the party, then we started producing music together and then Hot Creations was born. Originally, the vibe was more a sort of disco funk based rather than techno based. And then the whole deep house movement started, and we were part of it pushing this funk driven sound. After 5 years I got bored again because of so many people making the same sound and I needed something new. To be fair, Marco Carola really inspired me one night at Music On during his second season. I had never heard such a groove based music, and he really pushed me to start producing more music like that. I’ve always been like a deeper musical producer and this is definitely coming back in my sounds productions.

Talking about your label, Hot Creations, can we expect any new powerful release shortly?

The intent of the label has always been to create big hooky dancefloor records. I think that, no matter what it is, if it makes you dance and we feel it’s pushing the label forward, we put it out. Our last 2 releases are more techno; one that has just come out by Demuir, an amazing and very original producer who’s doing great things, while last year we had a huge production with Reboot, probably one of the biggest records of the year. We also have a couple of big releases coming up. One is called “Disco” and it’s a kind of housy techy record with some amazing beats, it’s really original in the way that it’s done, so I’m excited for that to get it released soon. The other, by myself and the Martinez Brothers, is going to drop probably in October and I’m also very excited about it.

What is your relationship with Ibiza?

I first heard about Ibiza in 1997 through a friend of my cousin who had already been there. The year after, I came for the first time on holiday to the island. Back then, you could get a package holiday with flights and accomodation included for really low prices, so we did that.  I went to Manumission at Privilege, Ministry of Sound at Pacha, where for the first time I heard Danny Tenaglia’s “Music is the Answer” on a dancefloor, and that blew my mind.  I came back to Ibiza in ’99 with a group of friends.  And then the following year in 2000, I decided to come with my box of records to spend  the summer here. I have been here every year since. Now I go in and out because I travel a lot, but for sure Ibiza is more than my second home, it’s probably the place where I spend most of my time during the year.

Your Paradise party, every Wednesday at DC-10, has entered its eighth season. What do you think it’s the secret of this success and what’s the concept behind the event?

It’s been amazing actually watching it grow. When we started, we were just doing one room inside DC-10 and now it’s slammed every week. We have, what I think are one of the strongest line ups on the island every year. It’s been a real journey, a lot of hard work and learning over the years.  I thought it would have been easy - just book some DJs and get some production, but there is a lot more to it than that!

I think the secret to its success is when people come there they really feel the positivity of the vibe, we are very inclusive. Myself and my core team, we all met at DC-10 at in the early 2000’s, so we’ve got a lot of history with the club, a lot of history in Ibiza together and we are like a family, we honestly are. So I think the people really feel that when they come there.

I think we have a nice balance crowd wise of Italian, Spanish, British people, which has developed over the years, when we first started it was predominately a UK crowd. People like the atmosphere, they get dressed up, but it’s still a rave - it’s a lot of fun.

What can we expect this year?

We have a lot of new artists that we are booking for the first time - people like Chaos in the CBD, Charlotte de Witte and Anna Wall, we also have artists that we book every year who always smash the place for us.

And people can expect a growth in music, I’m always trying to see where I can take the mornings there.  The last few years have been my favourite years playing in the club ever for me, since I started playing there in 2006.  Some of the mornings we had last season were incredible, when the sun comes up on the terrace.  So I’m just trying to soundtrack that the best I can.

As far as the party is concerned, the theme this year is Colour Odyssey, we’ve been really looking at spectrums of light and colour - the production this year is the best we have ever had, with Kim Nolan in charge who is doing an amazing job.

What is the creative process behind the choice of the theme of every season?

Kim chooses the theme, so it’s kind of her decision. We just try every year to do something a bit different and keep it going on like a sort of story, something that people can engage with.

Let’s speak about DJ Awards. You won the Tech House Master Award in 2018, while this year you are nominated in the International DJ category. What does it feel like to win a competition of this level?

Last year I won the Tech House Master Award, to win this category with some really amazing established artists up against me was wonderful.  It’s always nice winning things, especially when it’s the public who decide. It’s a reassurance that you are doing something right, all the hours on the road and the time in the studio, it’s really nice to be acknowledged for that. It’s nice to be nominated and if I win, it will be amazing. If I don’t, it’s just good to know that I’ve been thought of on that level.
