JAN BLOMQVIST

Author Raffaela Travisano | Date 08/01/2018

Hello Jan, so we meet again here now on Ibiza after having had the pleasure of working together in 2014 with a very awesome single (Time Again). How has your life changed from 2014 until now?

It has not changed much, it's just getting more stressful, but I was aware of that, I don’t want to complain. It has changed so far that I've tried to make even more awesome music. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

You succeed very well, it was a very nice gig here at WooMoon on Ibiza, where this year you are part of the lineup. I have seen you at the opening too with your band and you were recently also in Barcelona – from your point of view, what do you think is better or more authentic, with band or without?

With band is definitely cooler - because that's exactly what you want. Of course you want to be on stage with the band as a live musician. However, you have to differentiate it with all the stress, and plays, the eternal 4-gigs-a-week and 2 days sleep, and again 4 gigs, because in the end it's much easier to play solo. For example, I was able to play and try new tracks here today and it was fun. With the band, it's like you rode very hard, we don’t have the time to rehearse new tracks, and then you have to play a set, which you have rehearsed maybe 3 months before and that's about it – the music is boring for us. Maybe not for the people, but for us it's always the same. When I play solo, I can do whatever I want.

I was very excited to find a title from the Rolling Stones in your set earlier…

Yes, I was thrilled too, it's not a secret, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan are my idols in terms of writing lyrics. As their lyrics are just provocative enough and there are hidden messages in the text, that is just awesome. Those two just have it. This is the direction I want to go too and I think I also partly do it already. People read through and think – Hey hang on, what he is talking about is actually cool! About the track, I just wrote to the Rolling Stones and their label responded saying - Great track, you can do it! You have a go! In the last 20 years nobody had a go to elaborate one of their tracks and I am so happy that it worked.

Please tell us the title again?

Sympathy for the Devil is the original title and Synths for the Devil is our elaboration.

I love it – it is super nice. I was very surprised, but ultimately not that surprised, because Jan Blomqvist is always a trip for me. Earlier in your interview with WooMoon, I heard when you spoke about authenticity in our business. Tell me something blunt, something you have wanted to say for a long time…

That's unexpected now! Do you mean technically or generally speaking? There are 1000 things that one would like to talk bluntly about. I think that it is very important today as the underground blurs with the mainstream, the cool with the uncool… everything blurred and 10 years ago you could still say: Hey I'm the coolest and I'm the underground punk or whatever and today is so incredibly important that you ask yourself every day - Who am I? Where do I want to go? What do I want to do? And differentiate yourself as these days you are not sure anymore if it is cool or not and sometimes you mix up with certain people which you actually don’t want to have anything to do with. It used to be like - We are all techno, all anti-capitalist and about peace and happiness - but today is just not that way anymore, that's why every human being has to question himself again and again: Who am I and what can I bring in? And that is also in the music business.

Do you think you are a kind of messenger?

Well, I just want to do art, sometimes I do bullshit and sometimes I do art. That anyone can judge differently. In the end we’re living in a society that has artists, because a society without artists is very easy to manipulate, and that's what's happening right now, so artists are all important, but I think if you take yourself too seriously as an artist, it does not make sense. I want to be a small part of the whole and I’m trying to be that as far as possible, so I can make art without somehow writing big on my forehead that I want to be the new Che Guevara, but just part of something which is incredibly important and keeping this society alive.

Then you actually fit quite well into the concept of WooMoon, because you're part of the whole thing. I think that the person who brought you in here with and without band has definitely recognized that there is a lot more to it than many people have seen or wanted to see until now.

You have said that nicely Thank you. If you work all the time, you're happy to hear something like that in the end.

I can only wish you the best and ask you the usual last question for Night&Day Magazine: Are you Night or Day?

Night definitely, so the question is not even a question to me! I've read somewhere that there are extra schools in Scandinavia for late-sleepers and thought; Wow! But in Germany there were not - I was always incredibly bad at school until 12:00 at noon and from 12:00 to 3 p.m. I was always very good and the teachers thought I’d fuck with them! I'm just totally Night and I can just as well work so good from 10 p.m., before I'm a total rivet.

1 - RAY MONOEsperanza E.P - Moxy MuzikThis track is selling fast on vinyl but also hitting the Minimal Deep Tech chart number 1 spot after only 72 hours of being released, and when you hear it you will know why. A good example of how to sample properly and not have that cheesy gimmick factor which seems to be everywhere at the moment, a great deep groovy track which can also be dropped at peak time and smash the dance floor! 2 - Christian Burkhardt & Daniel Roth - Def - DoNotSleepA brilliant baseline on this track is accompanied with some great drum programming, if you want to keep ro...

The second millennium has brought us definitively into the digital and internet era. The music industry is undoubtedly one of the most affected industries. The new technologies have changed significantly in particular the figure of the DJ, whose role is almost symbiotically linked to that of the producer. Similarly, the digitalization, with the advent of mp3 first and the streaming era after, has made record stores a real rarity, like oases in a desert. But those who, like me, have been lucky enough to experience this evolution, for better or for worse, are aware that the true professional figu...

Ibiza is one of the undisputed queens of the kingdom of the night. If music is the star of the Ibiza nights, the dream is the cornerstone of all our nights. Freud wrote that dreams are the royal road to the unconscious. Dreaming is an involuntary imaginative activity and it is the vision that dominates all the other senses. In 1899 Freud published his book The Interpretation of Dreams. From that moment on, dreams are no longer the e...
