Congratulations on your Leonie, your daughter who has just been born… How important is family to you? Is it difficult to be a father and a DJ?
For me, family is everything, the most important thing I have in my life and it is the most important thing I will ever have in my whole life.
Being a DJ is not easy if you have a family because it requires a lot of sacrifice and organization.
For almost 30 years I have always had to travel to make my career work, to make my name known to the whole world.
You always have to choose the time you want to spend with your family but I would also like to develop a career that works to be able to be with them so I have tried my best to have a balance between both things.
I have tried to do many things to make my career and my family be good together, I could have done more I also believe in my career that I didn't because I put family first.
Sometimes I had to sacrifice my career, for example, there was a time when I had to have a week in the studio with someone super important and that, to tell you, it was the week of my children's birthdays, well, I sacrificed my career in the sense that I said not simply because for me it was more important to be in an important event of my family and I sacrificed it for this side.
The same on the other side, for example that it also happened to me that I had the opening in Ibiza and it fell just like that always happens, when the children's vacations start I miss an end-of-year show of my children.
And my heart aches because these are things that are very important to me and I couldn't attend everyone because there was one thing that obviously required my presence to be able to do that kind of thing. But I think I have done my best to make it work.
Has anything changed in Luciano after what has happened in the last two years?
During these 2 years of the pandemic I had to find a way to keep working and keep supporting my team and keep supporting my family. So I also had to reduce costs, before I always travel with three people and a technician to be able to do a certain type of DJing that I like and I played with the computer with 6 tracks. When Covid appeared I started going to more low-profile places like Zanzibar, I wanted to continue with my activity, so obviously there are much smaller things left and the promoters told me, well, please help us, so start traveling alone. It was a bit like going back to the beginning with my records, with the key. I was never afraid of change, on the contrary, I always find that changes are good because they push you intellectually, they push you physically to make adaptations. I love challenges. I went through a period of many years when I played with vinyl, then the CDs appeared, then the computer appeared, I also played live a long time ago, then the tractor and then the pandemic passed, it pushed me again to play at home and then to play with CDJ on another side of the world. I love that life always puts me to the test and that I am capable of adapting.
This year you have a new residence. Explain me the genesis of this new party and the concept?
Every Saturday I have my residence at the Club Chinois. It is the smallest club on the island. I always loved going to play there when it was Heart. There was always a good vibe because the club wasn't as big as Amnesia or Ushuaia and there was less pressure regarding the lineup, how many people come to play during the season. When we have done the party at Pacha, there were always about 8 DJs in one night, so this has given me the possibility of doing something more intimate, smaller, without having pressure to always call the same names that everyone brings and do something a little smaller a Boutique Club and after having met the technical team, the owner, all these people believe a lot in me, in my experience and they have given me a little free hand for the whole sound issue. Everything is almost perfect in this part of the sound, which for me in the the party is the most important thing: a super high quality sound to be able to express the music in the best way and for people to have a good time.
From Chinois I feel that since the day we open every Saturday we have been improving and now I can say that we have the best sound on the island, the sound experience is truly spectacular.
For me this is my main engine, when it sounds good, I feel super free the dance floor doesn't have a restaurant anymore so they only sink people who come to dance, people who come and dance all night and there is also a super sound, all the The technical part of the screen and the lights: it is something that fills me with great emotion and fills me with great motivation when I see that I have the tools to be able to do something special and Chinois has been a meeting for me where I can really express coherently with what I do myself. An audience that returns every Saturday, who are having a good time, dancing, I see a lot of smiles, I also see young people who are discovering all that music. I am very pleased to see young people, because I say “look at our movement continues from generation to generation” and that fills my heart.
The only weak point is on the upstairs terrace. they have a very small terrace, but we have made an effort so that people can a little, it is relaxed and the truth is that the Chinois team is very open to improving, listen, every week, we have meetings, what we can improve what we can change and We are working every week.
What is it like working with a professional like Joannes Goller that we all know from his work with Cocoon?
Joannes was one of the first people I met and all these years ago when I came to work in Ibiza they were the first people the first time they invited me to play Ibiza due at Coccon with Svet and Johannes, I have known them for many years and he has been a traveling companion, of music, of a lot of things many years ago and the fact that we are together in this adventure has been a very special and very beautiful thing.
How long did you not play in Ibiza? Did you miss playing in Ibiza?
Two years passed without playing on the island and of course I missed it. I came to Ibiza for the first time in 1997 or 1998, and since I left my country of Chile until now at the age of 45, it is the place where I have spent the most time in my life. My mother lives here, my daughter was just born in Ibiza, I feel Ibicenco at heart.
In which festival can we see you soon and which one will know us attend and why?
This summer I have made a great decision not to travel, not to leave Ibiza, I have rejected many things because of the issue that my daughter was going to be born here, that there were going to be many things going on and for the first time I have made the decision to stay the whole season and not traveling. So during the season a lot goes away here in Ibiza, I don't want to travel more like the last thing 30 years after the pandemic also changed me and I made the decision to do the things that really have me in my heart like Sunwaves, Caprice Festival, like going back to Chile and playing at my festival. To do things that are very important to me, that have marked my career and that I feel very comfortable with, now I am only trying to concentrate on the things that really fulfill me.
ND has become part of a new company, which has been able to work with new partners during the pandemic and we have founded Backstage. Will you be informed about the new technologies that are being developed in web3? We are going to do NFT ticketing, Marketplace and Metaverse We would very much like you to be our ambassador.
A little bit, you know what happens, I'm very Geek & Nerd and I've decided to get away a little at this time because every time I get into something I get so deep that it takes up a lot of time in my life.
Music is what I want to dedicate myself to, now I am closing this year Cadenza after 20 years of music, I have decided to close a super nice thing with a book. I want to free myself completely so that I can only be completely free and make music as soon as I return to my origins.
Next week, I think I'll be a little calmer and we can talk about it when we do the video interview.
Moving on to another topic, I was able to attend the closing of Day Zero you and Damián in 2020… Will you be at Day Zero this year? Do you think this event has something different from the others?
I am delighted, it has been a very nice experience. Central America and Latin America are part of my culture and I am in favor of being part of that and if the invitation comes back from Damián, I am delighted, he is on the side of the Day Zero ship. It is a very beautiful event, connected with nature in the middle of the jungle.
Last question, how are you always Night or Day?
I am always Day… I am as I am… and I am not going to change (sings and laughs).
